Miburi consists of a vest hosting an array of flexion sensors at the shoulder, elbows, and wrists, a pair of handgrips with two velocity-sensitive buttons on each finger, and a pair of shoe inserts with piezoelectric pickups at the heel and toe. Until very recently it was available from Yamaha only in Japan, but has now been removed from the market. Yamaha invented a semaphore-like gestural language for the Miburi, where notes are specified through a combination of arm configurations and key presses on the wrist controllers. Degrees of freedom not used in setting the pitch are routed to timbre-modifying and pitch-bending continuous controllers. Thus, by making the specific gestures it is possible to play sounds in a controlled fashion.
Various artists have used Miburi in dance shows to create musical performances.
Miburi was developed by Yamaha in Japan. |
